XIV Chairs and Table
belonging
to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
A set of twelve chairs, of which two have arms. They have straight padded green leather backs in elaborately carved frames with an acanthus leaf design, female figures, and a crest in a shell motif. The square leather covered seats have carved frieze on round fluted legs with an acanthus motif.
Restoration/conservation:
The restoration/conservation will consist of: removing the old leather, replacing it, re-gluing the broken elements and re-attaching the loose elements, i.e: legs,arms, etc.
The green paint will be removed and refinished by French polishing and adding a shellac and wax finishing to match the Breakfast table. Walnut Double Pedestal Renaissance Style Table:
Upon the pedestals are carved a figure of Joan of Arc, along with flowers, an acanthus leaf scrolling, and a ram's head joined by a straight stretcher with reeded fluted columns. This table has been put together using different parts of other furniture. Restoration/Conservation:
The restoration/conservation will consist of: re-gluing loose and broken parts and re-carving missing elements at the stretcher. All wooden surfaces will be cleaned, and the French polish will be restored by lightly sanding and applying shellac, along with a wax finishing. The table and chairs must have the same appearance and coloring. Restoration Currently
