Restoration &
     Refinishing

In order to bring back the beauty and luster of an antique piece of furniture, it takes superior craftsmanship which only comes with years of experience.   This art also requires an enormous amount of patience and attention to detail.   At times the work can be tedious, but the outcome is always rewarding.  To see a piece of furniture restored to its original condition is to see a valuable masterpiece come to life.  Unfortunately, many once proud pieces of furniture are lost due to those who cannot see the hidden beauty behind them.  By correctly restoring a piece of furniture, it is possible to increase the value dramatically.

When we first receive a new piece of furniture in our studio, we assess it for its underlying potential.  Our experienced craftsman will first examine the structure of the piece to determine the damage and to decide whether it is worth refinishing.   Before the refinishing process begins, quality materials are selected which will best reconstruct the piece.  Depending on the desired look, a variety of refinishing techniques may be applied.  At times, the original finish is enhanced to retain the integrity and authenticity.  Other times a piece may be stripped down to bare wood and a new finish applied.

To polish the antique furniture, shellac is applied by hand, which is an arduous process and the most difficult step in refinishing..  The shellac must be spread evenly with a consistent application to ensure a flawless finish. Embossing and application of gold leaf, two further specialties of Old World French Polishing,  may also be necessary in the restoration process. Upon completion, each piece is meticulously inspected for quality and accuracy.
